Internet Based Energy and Equipment Monitoring System |

THE
PROBLEM: As a result of the
deregulatory changes affecting the distribution and sale of electrical
power, new opportunities are now available for many companies to
reduce their overall utility costs through volume discounts offered by
many of the utility companies. In order to assist their customers with
reducing operating costs, Creative Control Designs, Inc. (CCD), a
subsidiary of Johnson Controls Corporation, wanted to provide them
with the energy consumption data that they would need for negotiating
for lower utility rates.

THE SOLUTION: REAL Controls developed
an internet based data acquisition system, which works with CCD’s
standard control panels, to collect and store energy consumption data.
Energy data is constantly monitored and recorded. This data is
periodically acquired by a computer located at CCD’s manufacturing
plant, using a modem connection to each of the control panels. The
computer then processes the data and inserts it into a database which is
located at CCD’s Internet Service Provider. Once the data is entered
into the database, it can be accessed using any web browser. Depending
upon the needs of the client, the data can be viewed in several ways
including bar graphs, trend charts and numerical data. Two sample
browser screens are shown above. Optionally, the data can be downloaded
into the customer’s computer for further analysis. In addition to the
energy data, the customer can also collect operating data on any piece
of equipment or parameter of interest.
THE RESULTS: The data acquisition system provides an efficient method for collecting the utility data needed to negotiate lower utility rates. Since the system uses CCD’s existing control hardware to collect the data, the implementation cost is minimal. Few, if any, equipment modifications are needed at the customers site. In addition to the utility data, customers can also collect equipment utilization data or monitor the operation of any piece of equipment at their facility. The data can be viewed using a standard web browser, or it can be downloaded to a spreadsheet file for additional analysis. THE CLIENT: Creative Control Designs, Inc. (CCD), located in Columbus, Ohio is a wholly owned subsidiary of Johnson Controls Corporation. The company designs, manufactures and installs control panels for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning applications for retail and commercial customers.
