For over 15 years, Burley’s Rink Supply (BRS) has been an industry leader in designing, installing and renovating ice skating rinks. The company provides a full range of design, fabrication, installation and project management services. Their products include construction of ice skating arenas and the equipment needed to produce and maintain the ice sheet.
Their customer base is world-wide. The refrigeration systems used by BRS have not changed significantly over the past 20 years. BRS recognized that significant technological, cost saving and marketing opportunities existed if they would invest in upgrading their refrigeration systems. Burley’s goals for the upgrades included the following:
  • Reduce the cost of manufacturing the refrigeration system,
  • Improve the flexibility and reliability of the system,
  • Incorporate several new features into the design
  • Allow future enhancements to be easily implemented,
  • Provide an easy to use operator interface
  • Provide a means to effectively troubleshoot and, if possible, remotely repair equipment problems.
  • Gain a marketing advantage from the technological improvements.

John Burley, president of Burley’s Rink Supply, Inc., asked REAL Controls, Inc. to evaluate their current refrigeration electrical system, recommend modifications which would help BRS to achieve their improvement goals, and engineer those changes into the company’s products. This paper summarizes the approach that REAL Controls took, to address Mr. Burley’s request. The work is described in four "subproject" case studies to better explain the project

  • TurboChiller Electrical System discusses hardware improvements that REAL Controls has made to the refrigeration, electrical, and control systems.
  • Operator Interface reviews the design of graphic user interface, replacing the system’s push button control panel.
  • Remote Equipment Troubleshooting explains how we resolved BRS’s need to find a cost effective method for world-wide troubleshooting equipment in ice rinks.
  • Other Features discusses some of the new features that have been added to the system.

Here's what Mr. John Burley, President of Burley's Rink Supply, Inc. had to say about the work REAL Controls completed for him: "We searched for months looking for an engineering company which could develop a product to meet our needs until we found REAL Controls.  The product which they developed for us is easy enough for rink personnel to use and yet provides all of the capabilities that our engineering and service personnel need for troubleshooting and maintaining the ice making equipment.  The engineer from REAL Controls was great to work with.  He was responsive to our needs and had the necessary technical skills to get the job done.   We are thrilled with the product that REAL Controls delivered."
